In 2008, "Blood-soaked Western Hunan" became the most popular TV drama on war because of its highest audience rating across the country. It draws nutrients from the folk cultural resources, and the display of folk culture and spectacle and customs is everywhere. Actually, it shows the distinctive features of TV drama made by Hunan Picture. The first half of the drama is about the great pathetic love between young men and women in the beautiful western Hunan, while the rest illustrates the braveness and loyalty of the brilliant youngsters there in the anti-Japanese war. The drama does not spare any room to describe the bandits in western Hunan with whom people are familiar. Instead, it focuses on the sturdiness written with blood of western Hunan people. Especially, the western-Hunan people's patriotism is fully exposed in the last two episodes. Even the local illiterate ruffians and gamblers, the most timid and cowardly greedy people, the children, youth, women who in need to be take care of most, joined the anti-Japanese war. Many audiences contribute the TV drama's immense popularity to three major reasons on internet:the original ecology of western Hunan ethnic customs, the moving romance of western Hunan guys, and legendary story of western-Hunan people in anti-Japanese war. The variety of folk customs and practice contains a profound cultural foundation and the psychological basis of populace, which not only spices up the film but also helps develop its plot.Although, people have attached little importance to the impact and value of folk culture in films in the past, the folk (whether real or reconstructed folk) has become an essential element in "Blood-soaked Western Hunan". Its display of the distinctive ethnic and regional customs in Western-Hunan not only conveys the Chinese folk culture information to the audiences, but also provides highlights to the research on mass communication. On the one hand, the TV can transfer effectively the western-Hunan's folk culture, the way of life and ethnic customs and practice, and extend broader and richer cultural connotations. On the other hand, the unique folk customs become the film's highlight, to a large extent, they help the TV drama achieve a good communicative effect, that is to create a higher audience rating.We can see that folk customs and communicate help each other.This paper begins with the folk customs displayed in TV dramas, and confirms their art values. Then, it analyzes the use of folk in TV dramas, and the relationship between the folklore and Communication is also explored. The conclusion is that folk is the life of developing the drama' plot, and plays an important role in dramas of subjects dealing with minorities'stories.
