Appellations not only reflect the status, cultural education, ethics and interpersonal relationships of both participants of the communication, but also reflect the speaker's ideas, attitude and emotion. They also to some extent reflect the cultural context of a time, a place, and a nationality. Employing appellations appropriately or not is directly related to whether the communication can be carried out smoothly. As a typical representative of Popular Literature, Yuan zaju is the mainstream in Yuan Dynasty, with its brilliant achievements.The thesis focuses on the appellations in "Yuan Qu Xuan" which was edited by Zang Jinshu in Ming Dynasty, then gathers all the appellations as much as possible through the writer's efforts, and gives classificatory descriptions to outline the appellation system of Yuan and Ming period. With specific pragmatic situations, the thesis discusses their cultural connotation and psychological characteristics of people. The study not only helps us understand the status and features of appellations in Yuan and Ming period, but also helps study the values of Han nationality, mental state and interpersonal relationships. There is significance not only in the aspects of lexicology, pragmatics, but also in sociology and culture.The main structure and content of this thesis are outlined as follows:Introduction:This part briefly introduces cause and significance of topics, research survey on the appellation, and research methods.Chapterâ… :based on the previous studies, the part provides a definition of the appellation and classifies it into three types which are named relative appellation, social appellation and affective appellation.Chapterâ…¡:The part concludes the characteristics of relative appellations in "Yuan Qu Xuan" by the comparison with Mandarin.Chapterâ…¢:The part studies the phenomenon of social life and some people's state of mind by the analysis of social appellations;Chapterâ…£:Affective appellations can be divided into king said, modestly, euphemistically called, nickname, reputation and the curse. By classificatory analysis, especially the curses which are widespread used, this part studies their cultural connotation.Chapterâ…¤:By the analysis of extensive use of relative appellations" in Yuan Qu Xuan", this part studies their pragmatic features, pragmatic functions and causes.Chapterâ…¥:The last part sums up the pragmatic features of appellations that increasingly relative appellations, hierarchical, flexibility, courtesy, vulgar, nationality, regionality in "Yuan Qu Xuan".
