Study On Modern Chinese Dictionary In The Past Thirty Years

Modern Chinese Dictionary (MCD for short) is regarded as the first normal form Chinese dictionary, and its authority has already been proved by time and practice. From the advent of the first version of MCD, researchers are dedicated to researching it in various aspects. However, the large-scale systematic studies on MCD have not appeared yet. No one has conducted a comprehensive analysis and summary on the research of MCD for more than thirty years. Therefore, we get the Thirty Years of Modern Chinese Dictionary Research as the topic and hope that everyone has a straightforward, comprehensive understanding on MCD through a comprehensive analysis on the research of forerunners.This paper regards the results from each point research of the researchers on five versions between 1978 to 2009 as the research object, gives the status of the category analysis and discussion on MCD in the mainland of China. From a macro point of view, this paper is divided into two parts. The first part consists of the contents from chapter one to chapter six, mainly related to internal research of MCD, and this part bases on the style of MCD, and refers to the guide of MCD, the pronunciation and font, word-collection and the notes of MCD, and so on.The second part includes chapter seven and chapter eight. We regard MCD as a whole and relate it with social and cultural studies and other dictionaries. We want to rationalize the development process and the commonness and individuality of research on MCD through integrating interior and exterior studies.The introduction mainly introduces the process of the revision of MCD and give us a current situation and the significance of the research. A simple analysis on research methods, data and innovative points is showed. Then we present the general idea of this paper.Chapter one, the introduction for Modern Chinese Dictionary. In this chapter, we make an analysis not only on the nature and characteristics of MCD but also on the evaluations on MCD in academic circle and the reasons of the continuous development of MCD to give the readers a general perception of MCD.Chapter two, some research on the style of MCD. We investigate the study area and the revision of the guide, and give an analysis of the flaws and ways in the studies of the guide. This part bases on the profile of the research survey and the process of revision and improvement of MCD as the Legend.Chapter three, a categorization on pronunciation and font of MCD. The research on phonetic spelling include the phonetic rules, research perspectives and research on phonetic spelling, and so on. For the font research, we give the analysis and discussion on the variant words, variant character and other fonts.In Chapter four, we collect the related articles and legislation about word-collection of MCD appeared in the academic circles to make a simple outline of the word-collection research in the past thirty years. The whole chapter is divided into four parts, including the circumstances outlined in the word-collection, discussions on the principles, scopes of word-collection, complement of the features in word-collection and some problems and treatments on the word-collection of MCD.In Chapter five and Chapter six, we mainly discuss the profile of the notes of MCD. The note is regarded as the soul and the core of the whole dictionary. This chapter include the situation and principles, inventory of advantages and disadvantages of the notes, and we make a historical research on the notes of MCD. Then, we make a research on the explanations of meanings which include the examples, bracket-annotation and other marks of MCD. Considering the content is too concentrated and the length of it is too large, we divide it into two sections including the first part and the second part to discuss.Chapter seven and Chapter eight are mainly based on the external research. In order to maintain the papers systemic, we put all the internal versions of MCD which include the single version and comparison of different versions together with comparative research between MCD and other dictionaries. Worthwhile, the comparative research with other dictionaries also include foreign language dictionaries and other domestic Chinese dictionaries. We can see the progressive characteristic of the MCD through the internal comparison and we also find the links between MCD and other dictionaries through external comparison.In Chapter seven, we begin with the theory of modern Chinese in the article "The Improvement of the Fifth Edition of The Modern Chinese Dictionary and Our Expectation of Further Improvement" written by Su Xinchun in 2007, and give a categorization on the theory of modern Chinese which based on the MCD, including the research on the base of regarding MCD as the corpus. Here we analyze the reasons why choosing MCD as the corpus and the role and orientation of MCD in research, and then we discuss the options, directions and characteristics of MCD as the corpus. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between the chinese teaching and MCD briefly. Finally, a research on the cross study in the literature, history, geology and other subjects is given.At last, we review and summarize the research results for MCD in the past thirty years, point out the shortcomings of previous studies, and make a few comments about the future research.
