ObjectivesThe purpose of this paper is to understand the student's mental health level and loneliness conditions in boarding primary and secondary school, analysis the impact of boarding life to primary and secondary's mental health and the loneliness, explore the relationship between mental health and the loneliness, and provide advice to bording schools about mental health education.MethodsField survey. The basic data mainly comes from the field survey that is created by the researcher which has a testified reliability and structure validity and Children's Loneliness Scale. In the self-compiled Child and Adolescent Mental Health Questionnaire we using exploratory factor analysis method, extracted five factors that reflect the Mental Health,include self-awareness, emotional and physical-based, behavior, academic and achievement motivation, and adaptability. The survey included students' gender, age, boarding time, new students, family economic level, the attitude to the boarding and their mental health level and loneliness condition, the students are from 4-9 grade in two nine-year boarding schools in Tieling and Benxi City.Sample survey. Sample 546 students learning in boarding primary and secondary school using the method of cluster random sampling,and 1315 students of common schools in order to a comparative study.ResultsThe self-compiled Child and Adolescent Mental Health Questionnaire has high reliability and validity by test.Using this questionnaire and Children's Loneliness Scale as tools, we investigate and study boarding primary and secondary students and find the resultsas these:1. There are differences between students from boarding primary and secondary schools and common schools in the factors of grade grouping, boarding time and the attitude to boarding, shows like that Mental health of primary school boarders were significantly higher than junior high school boarders, and loneliness level were lower; Students who have board for four years showed highest levels of mental health, and lowest loneliness. Student who like boarding life had higher level of mental health and lower loneliness.2. Comparing with students, boarding primary and secondary students had a high level of mental health, and experienced less loneliness.3. There was a significant correlation between loneliness and mental health of boarding primary and secondary students.ConclusionsThe factors of boarding primary and secondary students'grade, boarding time and the attitudes would affect their mental health level and loneliness, specifically expressed as these:Boarding pupils is higher than students of junior high school in the level of the mental health,and lower in the loneliness; In the boarding primary and secondary students four-year boarding students'mental health level are highest and loneliness are lowest. Students prefer to live in the boarding were higher in level of mental health, and lower in loneliness.Boarding primary and secondary students were with high levels of mental health than common students, this may be related to different types of peer interaction, academic environment, lifestyle.There was a significant correlation between loneliness and mental health of boarding primary and secondary students,we could predict the mental health through the sense of loneliness, therefore boarding students should be highly concerned about the loneliness.
