Onomatopoeia, a special kind of modern Chinese words, imitate sounds of nature or human with proximity iconicity. But linguists query that whether onomatopoeia are linguistic symbols and which part of speech do they belong to. Although onomatopoeia have not gotten enough attention and not been deeply studied so for, their frequent appearances show that they have outstanding academic values.Synchronically, this paper emphasizes analysis of onomatopoeia on its features, development, and its usage in network language, in the hope of contributing some new ideas to the study of onomatopoeia in modern Chinese language.This paper is composed of four parts:First comes the introduction, which presents us with the aim, significance, and background of modern Chinese onomatopoeia research, and lays a foundation of further study by comparing new onomatopoeia the old ones in tabulation.The second part, core of this paper, highlights features of modern Chinese onomatopoeia in aspects of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics. These features will be further analyzed through data statistics and analysis examples which are based on predecessors'researches omnibearingly.The third part is also the emphasis of this paper and represents the development of modern Chinese onomatopoeia. It mainly talks about the usage of modern Chinese onomatopoeia in network language and other forms of Chinese language. And the former is considered innovation of this paper since the connection between modern Chinese onomatopoeia and network emoticons has not been studied so far.The last part gives the conclusion of this paper, and summarizes the significance and value of studying modern Chinese onomatopoeia, although it might be a modest spur to induce others to come forward with valuable contributions.
