Carmen is one of the most dramatic works on the stage, also known as Georges Bizet's best achievement in his career. Since people regard the opera as"music literature", its artistic merit speaks for itself. Carmen not only plays an important role in the development of opera, but also is frequently performed, and so far, it is one of the world's best-loved operas. In this paper, the study of Carmen is divided into three parts:In the first part, it traces the origin of Carmen from three aspects. By arranging the history of French opera, the background and the origin of creation of Carmen is extended. In the second part, the study analyzes the tragic musical elements in Carmen, makes a study of the tragic story from aria, overture, ensemble, chorus and other aspects. Besides, it detailed studies how Bizet use the joyful gypsy musical elements to create the image of Carmen, the tragic figure; and further explores how the Gypsy musical elements embodied in the tragedy. It gives an interpretation on how the conflicts of drama and music are perfectly combined. It reveals the tragedy of the entire work, and it makes a new interpretation of the tragic life of the characters. Finally, the study further explains Carmen from the tragedy aesthetic sense. On one hand, it reveals the meaning and the beauty of the tragedy inherent in the play from both tragedy aesthetics and tragedy psychology perspectives. On the other hand, it illustrates the aesthetic value of the opera from its tragic ending and the eternal tragedy conflicts.
