Urban Agglomeration is the main body of boosting urbanization according to theeleventh Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development. And therefore thedevelopment of urban agglomerations is becoming the hotspot in both theory and practicefield. The purpose of this dissertation is to set up a theory system, and use it to evaluate thevulnerability of man–land system about urban agglomerations in China. Analyze the factorslimiting the sustainable development of urban agglomerations by means of the theoretic andempirical analysis in order to give some suggestions for reducing man-land systemvulnerabilityof the urban agglomerations. The dissertation is based on the theory of vulnerability. Based on a detailed discussionabout the conception of the vulnerability of urban agglomerations, evaluate the vulnerabilityscores. Take main urban agglomerations in China as the study units and take China CityStatistical Yearbook as the data source. Then establish an index system and an assessmentmodel of vulnerabilityand calculate the weight of these indices through factor analysis. Lastly, evaluate the vulnerability scores. The research frameworks of the paper are as follows:Firstly, the research problems are presented. And then the author summarizes the themeand latest progress of vulnerability research and the theory of urban agglomerations. At theend of this part, the research background and significance are analyzed, and the researchcontent, research method, and the technical route for evaluation are described. Secondly, thetheory of the vulnerability of man–land system about urban agglomerations is analyzed as thetheoretical basis for the paper. The author presents the connotation of the vulnerability ofurban agglomerations and analyzes the way of assessment. Thirdly, establish the vulnerabilityassessment index system and mathematic model, and then use it to evaluate the vulnerability. Finally, the main conclusions and innovation are summarized at the end of the dissertation, and the author also points out the shortage of dissertation and future research direction. The results indicate that the vulnerability of man-land system of urban agglomerationsdiffers significantly in different development stages and regions. The differences exist both invulnerability scores and in characteristics. Moreover, the eleven main urban agglomerationsare categorized into four types according to their natural and social-economic systemcharacteristics of vulnerability.
