The Research On Searle' Constructivism Of Social Reality

Searle's philosophy covers three areas:philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and philosophy of social. The theory of intentionality is a main line through his entire philosophical research. His philosophical profession started from philosophy of language.He inherited and developed Austin's speech act theory and discovered the essence behind the speech act-intentionality. Searle believes that intentionality is a feature of the mind which is about to,points to and refers to events and objects.The connection of the mind and the world is achieved through intentionality.Language is a derivative of intentionality, it has the same logical structure with intentionality. The mind assigns intentionality to sound and symbols,thus giving meaning to language, language is associated with the real world through the meaning.After discussed the meaning,the characteristics,the classification,intentional causality,and the model that intentionality represented the world in the network-background of intentionality from the individual level,Searle also elaborated that collective intentionality constructed the social reality through assignment of function and logical constructive rules,but also expouned the role of language as a special social reality in the process of constructing social reality.In short,through the commanding role of intentionality,starting from the multi-dimensional relationship of intentionality and language, intentionality and the world, language and the world, intentionality and the social, language and the social, Searle's unique analysis injected fresh facors to the framework of traditional philosophy of social, Searle's constructivism of social reality expanded the range of philosophy of social,all that highlighted the unique charm and the flash point of his constructivism of social reality. This thesis will explain and analyse the uniqueness and the theoretical significance of Searle's constructivism of social reality from the following aspects.The preface briefly introduces the development of searle's philosophy,reveales that theory of intentionality is the foundation in searle's philosophy, and the reason of studying constructivism of social reality from the perspective of intentionality. In the first section, Searle's theory of intentionality is analized,the structure, characteristics and classification of intentionality are explained,from causal perspective to reveal the connection of the intentionality and the world,to seek the family resemblance of speech act with intentionality through analogous argumentation on their structures, to discuss the production of the meaning and propose that meaning is rooted in intentionality. By elaborating the network-background of intentionality theory,Searle revealed the relationship among the intentionality,language and world from the individual level.That highlight the unique perspective of Searle's intentionality theory. Secondly,differentiating two facts,Searle analized the nature of the social reality, originally proposed the concept of the collective intentionality, through assignment of function and the logical constructive rules, skillfully connected collective intentionality with social reality,creatively answered the relationship of language and social reality. Finally and thirdly, making a general observation of the text,comb the theoretical significance and value of Searle'constructivism of social reality,and try to give some comment on its shortage.
