The beginning stage of TCAFL(Teaching Chinese As a Foreign Language) is the very first semester when foreign students start to learn Chinese. One of the most important and difficult part of this crucial period is the teaching and studying of Chinese adverbs, for their meanings are complicated and abstract, and their grammatical functions are changable and varied. Thus it's very hard for teachers to combine the meaning of the adverb and the relating sentence structure together. The Congitive Linguistics emphasizes a lot on semantic studies based on the theory of image schema, which is therefore used by the author to explore and design a set of teaching methods of Chinese adverbs at the beginning stage of TCAFL. Moreover, the author applied this new method to the teaching of three typical Chinese adverbs to English-speaking students, that the practicability and effeciency of it may be testified. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One explained why I chose this topic, introduced the content and method of this research, and certified the range of the adverbs involved. Chapter Two summarized the current researches related to the theme, and introduced briefly the theoratical bases of this research. Chapter Three first analized the major facts that would possibly hinder the learning process of Chinese adverbs, then presented the basic principles and steps of classroom teaching, which were applied to the teaching of "dou, hai, zai" in Chapter Four, so as to show clearly how to put the new method into practice. Chapter Five compared the test results of two groups which use the new method and the ordinary method respectively, in order to see whether the new method could solve the above hinderances or not. At last the author gave some constructive suggestions regarding grammar teaching in the primary stage of TCAFL, as well as a conclusion of the whole reaearch.
