As the tool of communication and thought, language has the close relationship with culture. But until now, we still haven't the accordance of teaching the cultures elements for there's still no unified teaching program about it. There are cultural conflicts in intercultural communication for the beginning stage of the foreign students, for lacking of the culture elements in Chinese language and the custom in the daily life.This thesis analyses four textbooks of elementary Chinese, which are New Practical Chinese Reader, Forty Lessons for Basic Chinese course, Practical Chinese conversation teaching material and Chinese course. Based on the meanings of vocabulary, this paper describes and classifies the culture elements of elementary Chinese. Aiming at helping the overseas students in Shanghai to adapt to the culture in the Chinese daily life, this paper gave some suggestions on how to choose and introduce culture elements related to language learning.This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one explains why I chose this topic, introduces the content and method of this research, and summarizes the former theories and thoughts. Chapter two describes the design of this research, collects and sorts out the date from the textbooks of elementary Chinese; Aiming at the students who study Chinese language in Shanghai, some suggestions about culture elements are proposed. Chapter three makes some suggestions about the basic principle to select the culture elements for the beginning stage of the foreign students. At last the author summarizes the contribution of this thesis, as well as a conclusion of the whole research.
