In history of calligraphy, the sense-oriented handwriting style and instructive rubbings in Song dynasty present a splendid sight, besides its intensive study upon the calligraphy system is also worth learning. It is to be noted that the extensive research on calligraphy starts from Tang dynasty, while it is not most glorious until it comes to Song dynasty, because a large number of excellent calligraphy works are published and they represent the crowning achievements in this period.Being different from previous works which focus on calligraphy theories, the calligraphy works in Song dynasty concentrate on classified collection of ancient records, systematic study on calligraphy history and detailed investigation upon carved rubbings.In a word, anything about models of handwriting, rubbings,history of calligraphy, collection, identification and evaluation is involved in the works of this dynasty. This practice not only attributes to the preservation of previous valuable calligraphy literature but also the establishment of models for later generations to imitate, which is of great significance in calligraphy history.This paper makes a comprehensive investigation upon the calligraphy works in Sony dynasty from philology perspective. It is broadly divided into two parts:the first part includes three chapters,which is the overall representation of the calligraphy works.Firstly, the author summarizes the development and achievements of calligraphy in Song dynasty, laying emphasis on the formation of sense-oriented style and popularity of carved rubbing.Secondly, based on the background of calligraphy development, the author makes a comprehensive exposition upon the achievements of calligraphy works in Song dynasty by taking previous ones as reference. Meanwhile, their features in terms of writer, content, genre, and language style are also analyzed. Lastly, the author explores the reasons of prevalence of calligraphy works from the perspectives of culture prosperity, emperor's advocation, prosperous rubbings, well-stocked works and bibliographic description in Song period. The second part is the last chapter, which investigates the fifty calligraphy works collected in this paper one by one. In this part, such aspects as the lifetime of the writer, the style of the art, the procedure of the composition, the errors in the records and the origin of the version are all examined, particularly the errors in the calligraphy records in bibliography and literature of past dynasties are discussed in detail.
