ObjectiveIn this study, the mental health status of 1071 pupils in South Mountain area of Jinan city ("Mountain area") were investigated, in order to understand the overall level of mental health and the main psychological problems among pupils in Mountain area, and to analyze the related factors and to explore the risk or protective factors that affect the overall level of mental health, and to provide theoretical basis for psychological education and intervention.MethodsCluster sample of 1142 pupils were chosen from three primary schools in South Mountain area of Jinan city. A total of 1142 questionnaires were issued, and the 1071 valid ones were recovered, and the effective rate was 93.8%.1142 pupils were selected to complete MHRSP, FES-CV, PHCSS and self-questionnaire. After recovering the questionnaires, we must check and input them. We were using Excel2003 to establish a database, and using SPSS16.0 to analyze the data. Measurement data was analized by using T-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation and two categories data was analized by using Logistic regression.Results1. Mental health status among pupils in Mountain areaThe overall departure rate of psychological problems is 13.9%, mainly for the learning disabilities (19.2%), character flaws (17.5%), social adjustment disorder (16.3%), moral defects (15.5%), bad habits (14.6%) and emotional disorder (14.4%) and so on.2. The relationship between demographic factors and mental health status among pupils in Mountain areaThe scores of MHRSP, learning disabilities, bad habits, and social adjustment disorder and so on have statistically significant differences in different gender, different grades, whether the class cadre, whether to stay off stage, whether the independence child of Health, whether boarding (P<0.05).3. The relationship between family factors and mental health status among pupils in Mountain areaThe scores of all MHRSP factors have statistically significant differences in different economic situation of families, different family types and marital status, different health status of parents, different level of education among parents (P<0.05). The scores of emotional disorder and conduct disorder have statistically significant differences in the mothers work outside or at home (P<0.05). The scores of special barriers have statistically significant differences in the fathers work outside or at home (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that there are statistically significant negative correlations between six of family environment factors and parts of mental health(r=-0.358~-0.071, P<0.05). There are statistically significant positive correlations between three of family environment factors and parts of mental health contradiction factor and all parts of mental health(r=0.065-0.278, P<0.05).4. The relationship between rearing styles and mental health status among pupils in Mountain areaThe scores of MHRSP, emotional disorder, character flaws, and social adjustment disorder and so on have statistically significant differences in different education mode of the father/mother/class teacher (P<0.05). Laissez-faire attitude would lead to psychological problems.5. The relationship between self-consciousness and mental health status among pupils in Mountain area The scores of all MHRSP factors have statistically significant differences in different self-consciousness (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that there are statistically significant negative correlations between six of self-consciousness factors and parts of mental health(r=-0.439~-0.075, P<0.05).6. The relationship between birth and health status and mental health status among pupils in Mountain areaThe scores of MHRSP, learning disabilities, emotional disorder, and social adjustment disorder and so on have statistically significant differences in different birth way, birth weight, whether had the major diseases when were birthed and personal health status (P<0.05). The scores of special barriers have statistically significant differences in different birth situation (P<0.05).7. The relationship between other factors and mental health status among pupils in Mountain areaThe scores of MHRSP, emotional disorder, character flaws, social adjustment disorder, moral defects and special barriers and so on have statistically significant differences in different whether cognitive obesity, personal favorite TV type, relationship with students, relationship with class teacher, the number of good friends and the different social atmosphere where were living(P<0.05).8. Logistic regression on general state of mental health among pupils in Mountain areaAnalysis showed that contradiction, moral religion, anxiety, hequn, whether the independence child of Health, whether boarding, family economic status, mother health status, relationships with students and the number of good friends have significant impacts on the occurrence of psychological problems among pupils in Mountain area. Contradiction, mother health status and relationships with students were risk factors of psychological problems. And the others were protective factors.Conclusions1. The overall level of mental health among pupils in Mountain area is poor, mainly for the learning disabilities, character flaws and social adjustment disorder and so on; there are significant correlations between all factors of self-consciousness and the occurrence of psychological problems.2. Various demographic factors, different family factors and different rearing methods and so on have significant impacts on the occurrence of psychological problems in Mountain area.3. The situation of birth, birth way, birth weight, whether the major diseases and health status have significant impacts on the occurrence of psychological problems in Mountain area.4. Contradiction, moral religion, anxiety, hequn, whether the independence child of Health, whether boarding, family economic status, mother health status, relationships with students and the number of good friends have significant impacts on the occurrence of psychological problems among pupils in Mountain area.
