The Female Characters In Wangquanan's Films

As an independent film director, Wang Quanan has been called "the alternative sixth generation director". From the "eclipse" to "Waking of Insects" to "Tuya's Marriage", the preference to the role of women seems to have become one of the labels of his works. He has always been the man who truly regards the life in common people's viewpoint, who shapes so many real and live images of women, who annotates the candid condition and the rich connotation of life by his own way. His movie' been awarded repeatedly has proved his unique art judgment and the excellent artistic talent.In this paper, in which author uses four female image in these three films:Ya Nan, Mao Nv, Guan Er Mei and Tuya for the study. The author, by using feminist film theory and focusing on their female identity and situation, attempts to explore the relationship between progressive and sublimation which director has shown out in shaping the four Women Characters. Firstly, the author analyses these two feminine images of Ya Nan and Mao NV who exist as the masculine dependency and cannot have present life without the masculine "protection". So we can say that they exists as "others" and have no subjectivity at all. Secondly, the author analyses these two feminine images of Guan Er Mei and Jia Niang, Their common ground is that they are engaged in resistance against patriarchy, and have displayed a series of actions. May say that they are the female awaking. Finally, the author analyses the image of Tuya. We can say that she is a perfect female, who is in possess of feminine gentle, the maternal glory, frail, the perception and masculine strong, the rationality, rough and so on special characteristics, which has realized the bipolar consubstantiality. Through these analyses, we might see the feminine image that Wang Quanan molded has broken the solely and mechanical pattern, which caused the feminine image more multiply and more plentiful. I hope that such analysis can give implications to other directors who commit to shooting the feminine movies so that they can shoot much more and better feminine movies.
