During the period from Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, Urumqi was named as DiHua City, GongNing City, and New DiHua City successively, and then was formally set up as a city, undergoing the significant period of social transformation in modern Xinjiang. With the social changes in the fields of politics, economy, culture, thinking, great changes have taken place in people's material and spiritual life, which is from traditional to modern. Compared with the inner China, the social change in Urumqi is slow in speed and lagging behind due to the restriction of the overall social development and social change level in Xinjiang. While compared with the past, undoubtedly Urumqi has made great progress. As the capital city of Xinjiang province, with the situation change of the whole country, people's material and spiritual life in Urumqi has undergone some changes in modern times.Based upon the collection and collation of the historical documentaries now available and analysis of the predecessors'research results, this thesis presents the social life style and features in Urumqi during the period from Qing dynasty to the Republic of China by giving examples of the social life of Man ethnicity, Han, Uyghur and Russian businessmen. Through presenting the social life in Urumqi during that period, the thesis is in the hope of better understanding of the social life style and features in Xinjiang, more concern of the ordinary people's livelihood, and discussion of the relationship between social life and historical transformation.
