The Nationwide Preparation for a War was a major strategic decision closely related to the state safety and interest. The decision was made by the Communist Party and Mao Zedong when the Great Cultural Revolution was approaching, given the austere international situation at that time. The Preparation was inevitably disturbed and destroyed by the Great Cultural Revolution and exerted great and profound influence on the political, economic and social development, and even the national defense and the diplomacy of China in the 20th Century. Based on the literature review of studies both at home and abroad, the present study analyzes the historical background and major measures of the Preparation during the Cultural Revolution, evaluates its influence objectively, and puts forward some thoughts on its significance for the present China. The present study, adopting the methods of dialectic analysis and history-theory combination, aims to contribute to academic innovations practically and realistically, providing precious experience and beneficial references for the military preparation in a new era as well as accelerating the construction of the socialist modernization and a harmonious society.The present study consists of an introduction and four parts.It analyzes the historical causes of"the Nationwide Preparation for a War"in the first part. The Preparation is a right strategic decision made by the Communist Party and Mao Zedong according to the international situation and China's neighboring safety in the 1960s.In Part II, the author presents the major measures taken for the Preparation during the Great Cultural Revolution, reviewing the history mainly from the four aspects, namely the enhancement in the mobilization for the Preparation, the adjustment of the system of the national defense projects, and the research and development of advanced weapons. The author evaluates the Preparation during the Great Culture Revolution objectivelyin the third part of the present study. It analyzes the interactions between the Great Cultural Revolution and the Preparation, admitting positive effects of the latter as well as its negative effects.In the last part, the author concludes experience and lessons gained from the Preparation during the Great Cultural Revolution which provide inspirations for the construction of the socialist modernization and armed forces for the national defense.
