Study Of The Polysyllabic Words In The History Of Southern Dynasties

The investigation object of this paper is The History of Southern Dynasties which is written by Li Yanshou in Tang Dynasty. It's the first study of the polysyllabic words in this book, we try to display some basic characteristics of Middle Ages Chinese language through describing and analyzing the polysyllabic words.This paper is organized into four chapters.Firstly: We will mainly introduce the outline of The History of Southern Dynasties, the general researching situation of polysyllabic words about this book, the research scope and use of materials. The judging standards of polysyllabic words of The History of Southern Dynasties include meaning, grammar, meaning of context, figure of speech and the appearing frequency of this word.At the last we will introduce the management of The History of Southern Dynasties' polysyllabic words.Secondly: We will thoroughly depict the structure of The History of Southern Dynasties' polysyllabic words. The History of Southern Dynasties' polysyllabic words can be divided into two genres:pure polysyllabic words and compound polysyllabic words. The compound polysyllabic words is outnumbered, occupying 98.5% of the whole. And the compound polysyllabic words can be divided into six genres: parallel compound, copulative compound, supplementary compound, subject-predicate compound, subject-predicate compound, v-o verb compound, added compound. Parallel compound and copulative compound occupy 63.2%.Thirdly: We will compare with the polysyllabic words of The History of Southern Dynasties and San Guo Zhi. We mainly compare quantity and structure of the polysyllabic words, find the differences, draw the conclusion and reveal its rule.Fourthly: With reference to Hanyu Dacidian, the purpose is to probe the new words and new meaning of the polysyllabic words in The History of Southern Dynasties. At the same time, we found some flaws in Hanyu Dacidian. We will correct some of them in my paper.
