Metaphor, also known as"analogy"which is commonly called"making examples", is to use the similarity of different matters in order to describe a thing needed to be expressed by other thing. Metaphor must have two compositions and two conditions. Two compositions refer to:"body", the object to be described and"vehicle"which is a thing to be compared to. Two conditions are: body and vehicle have different nature and they have difference; they have similarity. Cao Xueqin is a great master of literature and language. The language of"Red Chamber Dream"is known as "Pearl of the artistic imperial crown of language". Its language has various manifestations, abundant connotations, unique style and it is beautiful and profound. The refining, deep and meaningful metaphor adorned in the great work which has its unique charm is publicly acknowledged as one of the most splendid flowers in the rhetoric history. Therefore, it is typical and characteristic to take the metaphor in"Red Chamber Dream"as research object and it can further enrich metaphor study of Chinese language.This paper takes the metaphor in"Red Chamber Dream"as research object and comparatively makes systematic summary, inquiry and analysis of the metaphor in"Red Chamber Dream". Research content divides five chapters: first chapter is introduction; second chapter makes analysis to the component type of metaphor in"Red Chamber Dream"mainly five categories such as simile, metaphor and so on. Third chapter mainly discusses unique features of metaphor in"Red Chamber Dream"and three parts which are expressive metaphor, handing down for popularity and proper metaphor are discussed in this chapter. The forth chapter analyzes metaphor's function in part of content including four parts which are showing the work's theme, making description to characteristic environment, suggesting the author's attitude and creating characters. The fifth chapter explains understanding constraints of metaphor and detailed analysis is made in part of language environment and non-language environment.
