According to the theory of realism from ancient Greece to 19th century,the western art has always been concerned about how the arts can be more realistically response to the reality, thus which were formed a set of strict painting theory. Not until the 1920s did realistic artists began to reconsider the relationship between the art and the reality. Matisse, the leader of fauves, was creating a new unique artistic style by learning the traditional painting, while incorporating the elements of African art as well as the form of decorative oriental art into. His painting art is no longer a true representation of nature, but a means of expressing inner world of the artist, that is to say painting is a parallel to nature, which means that it is the other world to reflect the artists real feelings. The color, under his brush, was gradually moving toward an independent element of expressing feelings from the subordinate status in painting system, and the lines was highlighted from the hidden shadow which to be more swiftly and vividly; Then the perspective of the paintings was replaced with plane exaggerated modeling. As the 20th century's greatest artists, Matisse had made great contributions to the development of modern painting art in theory and practice.This paper begin with Matisse's background of forming the painting characteristics.Through analysing his painting colour ,lines, composition, and painting language elements, it also explains the Matisse's "performing" centered artistic theory as well as the spiritual comfort to people with artistic pursuit from his painting in details.
