Research On The Tone Of Tang County Dialect

Tang County is located in the midwest of Hebei province. The Tang county's dialect belongs to the DING BA stream of BAO TANG zone,which is one of the branches of JI Lu Mandarin.This essay takes the tone of the Tang County dialect as study object, on the basis of field investigation and achievement of former research, and makes a comprhensive analysis and detailed description of the tone system of the Tand County dialect.This article mainly covers five parts.The first part record the system of final sound and initial consonant of a Chinese syllable , the situation of suffixation of a nonsyllabic"r"in Tang County dialect. The second part, based on the ancient origins of different sounds, using quantitative analysis to anlyze and sort out voiced speech sound in rising tone words,voiced initials in falling-rising tone words and the current pronunciation of ancient entering tone words.The third part, analyzes sandhi tone and modified tone of suffixes"Er"in the Tang County dialect and record it carefully. This part also makes a comparison with the medieval sound of the deep tones in Tang County dialect and takes preliminary analysis. At fourth part, this essay discusses the tone sandhi of rising tone and falling-rising tone and study the systm of tone sandhi of Tang County dialect. The fifth part compare falling-rising tone to surrounding areas and Shanxi dialect.The valuable discovery and main research conclusion of this essay are :1.The tone of Tang County dialect (Gaochang town dialect) include high-level tone, level tone,rising tone and falling-rising tone. In considering its archaic Chines sound,the tone of word in level tone divide into two parts. The most words combined with level tone-falling rising tone and the left sorted to rising tone. The words in voiced initial consonant at mediaeval times shift into rising tone and the words in secondary voiced initial consonant shift into falling-rising tone. The words in atonic syllable wiht falling-rising tone shift into four tones, and most of these change over to rising tones. The above situaition is similar to the falling-rising tone discipline in"Zhongyuan Guyun"2. Based on the tone sandhi, the tone of single word in Tang County dialect followed a same tone sandhi rule with falling-rising tone united by falling-rising tone and rising tone. There is a tone sandhi rule in ancient voiced sound and falling-rising tone in voiced sound, and this tone sandhi rule is different from a kind of rising tone category.Due to the above study, this article established a distinction way for falling-rising tone in tone sandhi system, and made a preliminary arrangement of basic vocabulary in falling-rising tone.3. the tone sandhi of rising tone in ancient voiced sound and falling-rising tone in voiced sound in areas surrounding Tang Cunty is basically same to Tang County dialect. This situation is the same as Jin dialect in Shangdang area and Zhongyuan Mandarin in Fenhe area. This discovery gives evidence to the fact that the people living Tang County emigrated from"Large Locust tree"in Hontong county in Shanxi province.This study provides language material and supplement for Tang county dialect research and even the study of Hebei dialect.
