Along with the development of the globalization, the culture is becoming increasingly globalized as well. It is well recognized that the internationalization and integration of culture have become an inevitable trend. However, at the same time, it is undeniable that multiculturalism undergoes full-fledged development as well. At the tide of globalization, dominant cultures inevitably creep into others and bring about cultural globalization or acculturation, in which some subordinate cultures are running the risk of being assimilated. On the other hand, these weak cultures are endeavoring after the maintenance of their own cultural identity and keeping striving for the development of their own cultures. Accordingly, as for China which enjoys a splendid history of five thousand years, confronting with culture globalization, we should do our utmost to preserve and carry forward our cultural uniqueness and disseminate Chinese culture. Translators, like bridges across various cultures, ought to shoulder the historic and unshirkable mission in this process.In the course of translation, translators either adopt domestication to emphasize the target language culture or foreignization to retain the source language culture. As two major translation strategies, domestication and foreignization have all the time been a heated topic in the translation field. Though domestication was the relatively dominant translation strategy in the past, this competition is gradually slanting towards foreignizing strategy as a result of its outstanding effectiveness in the preservation and dissemination of the source language culture.This thesis centers on the standpoint that foreignization is an effective strategy to disseminate Chinese culture; and it is based upon the theory of foreignizing translation, which is introduced and upheld by Lawrence Venuti. For Venuti,"But foreignizing translation is also an attempt to recognize and allow those differences to shape cultural discourses in the target language."Chapter 2 mainly discusses the present two translation strategies: domestication and foreignization, and then the author makes a comparison between foreignzation and domestication aiming to emphasize the advantages of foreignizing translation in better reflecting the cultural differences, avoiding and compensating for the loss of culture. In Chapter 3 the author demonstrates the necessity of foreignization all-sidedly. Chapter 4 discusses in detail the relationship between the preservation and dissemination of Chinese culture and foreignization, and a tentative exploration is offered from the perspectives of the various levels, the approaches and examples of foreignization.The purpose of the paper is to prove that foreignization can not only maintain the characteristics of Chinese language and cultural connotation, but also enrich and disseminate Chinese culture effectively.
