Communication, which is the elementary process of human social interaction, is the basis for all social activities. With the rapid development of globalization, communication plays an increasingly important role in social life. For today's college students, the ability of communication becomes an important indication to measure their comprehensive quality. Excellent communicative philosophy and competent communicative ability play an irreplaceable role for people to mitigate psychological discomforts and adapt to the modern society better. In recent years, it is not uncommon to see the reports about university students'psychological disturbance and employment difficulties caused by interpersonal communication problems. Consequently, there appear a number of researches to about college students'interpersonal coordination and social adaptation. But what is the current situation of college students'communication? What factors does the intra-psychic mechanism for college students'communication consist of? What the characteristics does the college students'communication behavior have? What internal relationships are there between college students'communication and their psychological health? These questions appear to be simple, but it is difficult to find satisfactory answers in existing studies.In order to probe into the present situation of college students'communication initiative and find out the intrinsic psychological structure and behavioral characteristics of college students'initiative communication, this study, according to psychological theories, divides communication initiative into initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior. In addition, the study also makes a profound analysis of college students'concrete representations on the two factors.Intending to study systematically the structure and characteristics of college students'initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior, as well as the internal relationships between college students'communication initiative and psychological health, the study adopts several methods, such as literature analysis, questionnaire method, and comparative analysis, etc. to carry out this research. The main content of this study includes three aspects as follows: the study of college students'communication initiative (initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior), the study of college students'psychological health, and the study of the interrelations between college students'communication initiative and psychological health. First of all, the study systemizes the literature about college students'communication both in China and abroad. And it develops the open questionnaire on the basis of literature analysis. Secondly, according to theoretical assumption, literature analysis and the results of open questionnaire, the study develops the College-Students Communication Initiative Questionnaire with good reliability and validity. And the College-Students Communication Initiative Questionnaire includes two sub-scales: Initiative Communication Consciousness Sub-Scale and Initiative Communication Behavior Sub-Scale. It also adopts the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) and develops the formal questionnaire. This research employs the method of random sampling to select 900 university students for investigation. Through empirical study, the research, scientifically and objectively, reveals the current situation and characteristics of college students'communication initiative and psychological health. It also explores their internal relationships. The study results are as follows:â‘ In general , the level of college students'initiative communication consciousness is relatively high (the average score is 3.9980). However, the level of college students'initiative communication behavior is slightly lower than initiative communication consciousness. As to the factor of initiative communication consciousness, the score of self-improvement consciousness is the highest, followed by the consciousness of developmental value. The score of positive emotional experience acquired through initiative communication is the lowest. As to the factor of initiative communication behavior , the dimension of emotional information communication gets the highest score, followed by the dimension of psychological state adjustment and the score of self-improvement pursuit is the lowest. Meanwhile, there exists significant difference among college students of different genders, different grades and different home location, both in the two factors of initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior.â‘¡The two primary dimensions (initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior) and all its factors are significantly correlated to psychological health (p<0.001). College students'initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior are significant predictors for their state of psychological health. To be specific, any factor in initiative communication consciousness and initiative communication behavior has some prediction function on one dimension of psychological health.â‘¢There exists significant difference in psychological health among college students with different levels of communication initiative (p<0.05). As a whole, the higher level of communication initiative a college student has, the better state of psychological health he is in.
