Tea classics are an important carrier of Chinese tea culture, and their interlingual translation offers an effective way for traditional culture to go global.Italy is one of the most important countries on the Silk Road. With the advancement of the “Belt and Road Initiative”,the importance of the translation and dissemination of Chinese tea classics in Italy has been increasingly obvious. As one of the important Western cultural powers,Italy is a country that began to study Chinese tea quite early in Europe. In the 16 th century, the famous Venetian geographer Giovanni Battista Ramusio had talked about Chinese tea in his Travel Notes(Navigationi et Viaggi).Professor Marco Ceresa, the contemporary Venice sinologist and honorary chairman of the Italian Tea Culture Association, was the first person to have translated into Italian the full text of the most representative Chinese tea monograph The Classic of Tea written by Lu Yu in the Tang Dynasty. However, for many years, this kind of cultural exchange has been limited merely to some tea culture lovers and Sinology researchers in Italy. An in-depth study as well as the translation of Chinese tea classics is in need of further improvement. This thesis is written just to answer this urgent need. The thesis has analyzed briefly the history and current situation in Italy concerning Chinese tea culture through the search for and collation of Italian tea culture website information and Italian tea culture books, and summarized the rendering process of Chinese tea classics into Italian, and some existing problems. The thesis focuses on the following four points: the translation and introduction of Chinese tea classics into Italian and the analysis of the status quo of international communication;the memes of Chinese tea culture in Il Canone del Tè(the Italian version of The Classics of Tea)from the theoretical perspective of memetics;the feasibility of meme intertextuality and imitation between the two low-contextual languages of English and Italian;the problems in the rendering process of Chinese tea classics in Italy and the international communication strategy of Chinese tea culture in the context of “Belt and Road Initiative”.The author has translated into English Il Canone del Tè by Marco Ceresa,in order to find out some similar memes in these two low-context languages for the purpose to explore thepossibility of their intertextual imitations. This is done also to facilitate readers, who do not understand Italian, with an English semantic reference. The author then has back-translated the Italian version into Chinese in order to compare it with the original Chinese text The Classic of Tea,and to find out the missing and misinterpreted information in Marco Ceresa's translation process.Through the comparative analysis, the author has summarized the cultural memes that have been ignored by the translator, which actually play an important role in the international communication process of Chinese tea culture.Hopefully, this may provide some reference to those who want to translate Chinese tea classics in the future.Under the guidance of communication theories, this paper has also tried to summarize some problems existing in the process of Chinese tea culture's international transmission, and puts forward some personal suggestions for its improvement. The final intention is to make China's high-quality tea culture memes function better with their international communication values.
