Li Yu is a famous opera writer and novelist at the end of the Ming Dynasty and at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. His novels reflect the life and aspirations of the general public to a certain extent, and have relatively distinct ideas about democracy, so his novels are loved by many people. Twelve Houses is a relatively representative novel of Li Yu's works, and it's praised as "a superior novel of the vernacular short stories in the Qing Dynasty". The ideal of writing of Twelve Houses is "to express the moral pursuit through the amorous appearances, that the unification of amorousness and moral is the pursuit of Li Yu. At the same time, he adds the incarnation of his own ideals in his novel to express his ideal of being a hermit in the world.In this article, we'd like discourse the amorous appearances of Twelve Houses and the moral pursuit of the author Li Yu separately, then make a plane dissection about Twelve Houses from these two aspects, and then discuss that how to get the artistic characteristics that Li Yu shows his moral thoughts with amorous descriptions from the work itself, so as to give some useful help about the research into Twelve Houses.First, we'd like sum up the twelve short stories of Twelve Houses in a few words. Next, we will analyze the amorousness and moral showed in the stories separately from the text itself and the evaluation of Du Jun, as well as the individualized language of the author. Then we'll analyzethree aspects as follows:the historical background and cultural trends of that period, Li Yu's experience,thoughts and writing practice, fawning on customs and conforming to customs as well as the unification of these two thoughts. This analysis will help to explain that why there are amorousness and moral in the book and how the author makes these two things to unify. In addition, the predominant characteristic in art of Twelve Houses is mainly writing the stories with the theories and methods of opera. This characteristic is mainly incarnated in the following aspects:single characters, replacing the straightforward writing style with action, ingenious plot. This characteristic also reflects the unification of amorousness and moral. At last, there is a review of the whole article. It begins with discoursing the meanings of excellent literature by the grass roots, then telling the reason from writing habits and literary style, followed by the use and innovativeness of opera theories in novels writings. At the end of this article, we simply refer to some effects of Twelve Houses, including the representativeness and particularity of the text, as well as the effects and acceptations in later novel writings.
