In this paper, hand-beating monosyllabic verbs are the objects as the research object, On the basis of the sub-categories, the study discusses the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs from their syntactic distribution, semantic features and pragmatic functions. Besides the preface and conclusion, the paper consists of seven chapters.In the preface, the essay introduces the main background, the method and the theoretical and practical significance of the study on the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs in modern Chinese. It also illustrates the syntactic distribution, semantic features and pragmatic functions of the verbs under the guidelines of three-dimensional grammar and annotated corpus, as well as its uneasy way and shortcomings.The first chapter mainly reviews the research and the work on the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs. At the same time, it points out briefly the limit.The second chapter classifies the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs according to the body verb standard. Analyzing and studying the syntactic distribution, semantic features and pragmatic functions of the verbs from different aspects, we find the result that the verbs fall into the category of referring-thing body verbs.The third chapter analyzes the main and secondary syntactic function of the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs. On the dimension of syntax and on the basis of the corpus-based research we describe the syntactic characteristics of the verbs. We study the verb-object type and the verb complements as subjects, objects and attributes, which are the secondary function of the verbs. We also analyze their sentence structure and its other function. From the discussion above, we can see that there's a certain link between the syntactic characteristics of the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs and its semantic attributes.The fourth chapter illustrates the common patterns of the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs in various semantic circumstance. With the idea of "virtue of form was established areas, collection areas of interest constitutes a system", we finish in the corpus analysis, and results in the common sentence of the verbs. Through the conversion of sentence analysis, we come to the common semantic category of the hand-beating monosyllabic verbs. In order to extract the verbs'semantic distinction between the various members of the features, we will provide the analysis of the meaning of dictionary entries with corpus and summarize each meaning of the prime characteristics. The fifth chapter is about the pragmatic function of the verbs including the classification, rhetoric and style. Corpus-based statistics shows that the verbs have the disproportion in style and category. Finally the verbs can be flexibly used as metaphor,personification and metonymy.The last part summarizes research results and demerits of this dissertation.
