Smithing techniques never stops developing towards its cultural origin. A major issue of contemporary smithing is to inherit traditional techniques and to explore new designs. Today, as the handcraft techniques becoming more and more popular, learning from the orientation of traditional handcrafted smith will grant us of creating more freedom for creativity in its future developments. we conducted our research in a purpose of reviewing the handcraft's history and prospect for its future. Handcrafted smithing inherits and carry forward the traditional hammering techniques, whilst ancient hammering and chiselling techniques enchant modern smith with cultural values. Modern smith uses materials from multiple sources, at the same time it is exhibited in vast styles like a dynamic art. The inherent freedom it bounded with on a certain level broke through the traditional concepts, and thus expanded our perspective on smithing art. Using traditional techniques together with modern concepts, modern handcrafted smithing will lead us into a new era about an enjoyment in both art and culture.Through a deep study in both traditional hammering and chiselling techniques, this article was dedicated to inherit and carry forward the techniques and art in traditional smith. It also analysed in what position the hammering techniques is at and how the hammering techniques actually works in the modern smith industry. Finally, it overviews the cultural values and potentiality of the handcrafted smith.
