In recent fifty years, synonyms in ancient Chinese have been the hot topic in the field of Ancient Chinese Lexicology. But compared to the abundant achievements obtained on the study of synonyms in modern Chinese, the study of those in ancient Chinese seems to be relatively insufficient, and to be deficient in synchronic perspectives and in specific books. The study of vocabulary on specific books is the basic one of the history of Chinese vocabulary. Only by depicting the features of the whole vocabulary from many aspects such as from one period to another period and from one book to another book, can we fumble the features and history of the development of Chinese vocabulary. Based on the synonymous relationship of the vocabulary, by selectively carrying out on the specific books of different periods in a planned way and describing the linguistic phenomenon from all-around survey, the whole study can have a solid foundation of Chinese vocabulary. For this purpose, the thesis tends to do some research on the synonymous relationship of monosyllabic adjectives of the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang, the masterpiece of pre-Qin Legalist Literature.This thesis consists of five parts:Introduction; the Theories and Methods for the Study of Monosyllabic Adjectives of the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang; the Discrimination of Monosyllabic Adjectives of the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang(I); the Discrimination of Monosyllabic Adjectives of the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang(II);the Cause and Ways of Forming the Monosyllabic Adjectives of the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang.The thesis sums up 38 groups of monosyllabic adjective synonyms on the semantic relationship of the originated words from the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang and referring to the annotation and the research accomplished by predecessors. It confirms the sememe of a word in every example by examining all the examples of monosyllabic adjectives in the Book of Legalists by Shang Yang. Then it also confirms the common sememe of every group of 40 synonyms by comparing and discriminates the differences in acceptation of these synonyms within the range of common sememe. On the basis of the above results, the thesis studies on the forming cause and ways of synonyms of monosyllabic adjectives in the Book. Having research on this, the thesis draws a conclusion that the most important and the widest usage is the connotation of acceptation in the cause and ways of forming those synonyms in the Book.
