Study object of this paper is the incidental music, Pelleas et Melisande, of the composer Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) in the later French Romanticism.Faure's life, composing, and writing background of the incidental music, Pelleas et Melisande, were described from the start. And Maeterlinck's Symbolism feature and the script text were sorted out. The music versions and performance conditions were explained.Secondly, based on Faure's inheritance of French music and the future Impressionist music, the incidental music, Pelleas et Melisande, was analyzed at a more deeply level.This section include:the structure of the incidental music, music text analysis, technical features, style characteristics, and artistic features of this music. The analysis focused mainly on issues on its musical language and musical structure, and the description of the music position in the drama, laying the groundwork for the later function analysis of the drama.Furthermore, combined with the feature of Maeterlinck's Symbolism in the literary works, the incidental music, Pelleas et Melisande, was analyzed on the functional role of the drama.The final content of this paper is to make a historical evaluation for the incidental music, Pelleas et Melisande. This section described Faure's inheritance on the French Romanticism music and forseeing of the Impressionist music by summarizing the features of this incidental music. This work of Faure was historically evaluated with the integration of the preceding analysis.
