The issues concerning the relations between media and justice are not only related to studies in journalism and sociology, but also related to studies in law. This submitted dissertation has observed and discussed the issues from certain aspects in three parts. The first part focuses the relations between media and justice, while opening out their mutual reaction and inherent contradiction based on analysis of their different natures and social functions. The media's role of supervision over justice brings about active and passive impacts simultaneously. Confrontation between free press and fair justice cannot be avoided as there is demand for open judgement. In the second part, the historic development of relations between media and justice in the United States is reviewed and the way of studies of comparison is used to observe the similar issue in China, with two typical cases raised to show the improper intervention into justice by the Chinese media. This part intends to provide possible guidance for China's efforts to achieve a balance and integration of media and justice by displaying U.S. experiences. The last part comes back to the reality in China. It is vital to improve the systematic environment in China for the supervision over justice by the media as there is still serious lack of legislation in this field. An integration of media and justice will benefit both free press and fair justice.
