This research was carried out to study the status, problems and strategies for fruit production in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province by analyzing the data on fruit production, and marketing of the past 13 years, particularly focusing on those in recent 2 years, and meanwhile considering the related climate, market information and production practices. Advantages and disadvantages of fruit production were discussed and reasonable and effective strategies for promoting safe and high quality fruit production were proposed.1. Situation in fruit production: Fruit production in Hangzhou may be classified into three phases: shrinking, recovering and rapidly increasing ones during the past 13 years. Despite some fluctuations, there was an increasing trend both in total fruit production and economic value. Fruit production, ranking the sixth in terms of its production in planting industry of Zhejiang province has played an important role in creasing income/efficiency for farmers and improving agriculture structure. Besides, orange was mostly planted in Hangzhou and followed by pear, while strawberry planting has been rising very quickly, and the other fruit lets, such as loquat, plum, bayberry and persimmon, have relatively few increase. However, there was a tendency of decline for orange and peach, based on the production proportion, conversely, increasing trends occurred to pear and strawberry. Fluctuations of fruit production were mainly caused by the bumper and poor harvest years. The main fruit producing regions in Hangzhou were Jiande, Chunan and Tonglu, with leading region of orange in Jiande and Chunan, and of peach in Tonglu and Fuyang, while relatively extensive regions for pear in Tonglu. Other fruit lets had their own local features too. Fruit processing was still quite weak in Hangzhou and no large fruit processing corporations can be found, and processing were mainly on confect, greengage and orange can, even no processing of other fruits.2. Demand analysis on fruit consumption and trade. As a whole, the leading fruits, based on planting area and production, were apple, orange and pear, and unmarketable and superfluous tendency in their trades has appeared for many years. Per capital production of fruit and vegetable in China has exceeded the world average level and practical consumption has also overtaken the level of most of the developed country. In addition, variability of fruit consumption and demand in rural section was steady in Zhejiang province, so it is necessary to control the production scale. There was a lower proportion of fruit export in China, while increasing in both import and export. There was gradually decline in the export of fresh fruit, but a dramatic increase in import, also proportion of processing fruit export was rising, however, import fruit was decreasing accordingly.Being a member of WTO (World Trade Organization), it would be beneficial to the export of processing fruit; meanwhile, it could be confronted with serious challenge of foreign high-quality fruit, which could occupy much more share of home market. It was imperfect for the rendition network in Hangzhou, and most of the mongers were single and establishment of the market was lagged. Farmers were deficiency in experience of taking part in market and big corporations did not expand their distribution.3. Analysis of inner advantage in fruit industry. Market of pear saturated on the whole, it was surplus in midseason and shortage in off-season, but there was still potential large market for the southern precocity pear. Climate resource in Hangzhou was fairly fit for pear growth and earlier in season than Japan. Advantages of technology and varieties and high qualities provided more power in competition to develop precocity pear. As one of the dominating fruits in Hangzhou, development of orange was potentially limited, in light of the ecological conditions in Hangzhou, which is in the north edge of suitable region of orange and orange is easy to be frost-prone. There was predominance in early-develo...
