2002 is the first year after China's entrance into the World Trade Organization (WTO). The situation thereof gives special importance to the study of Sichuan's export. The present thesis thereby aims to follow the basic theories of strategic management and make analyses of the characteristics, problems and environment of the province in export in an effort to combine the principles of strategic management With the exporting practice of Sichuan so as to solve the problems existing in its export and offer insight to the development of its foreign trade.Chapter I of the thesis analyzes the characteristics and problems that exist in Sichuan's foreign trade to the effect that the key reason for the backwardness of province's export is none other than the lack of competitive edge. Chapter II focuses on the environment of the province's export and makes careful analyses of the favorable and unfavorable environmental factors that influence its export in an attempt to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the province's foreign trade. Chapter III, which is the main body of the thesis, is a concentrated study of the competitive Strategy Sichuan should take in its export. It, by employing the concepts and methodology of strategic management and analyzing the competitive strategy of Sichuan in exporting traditional products and those that can be developed into core products of competitive advantage, puts forward for adoption the competitive strategy of putting cost advantage in the first place in the province's export of labor-intensive and resources-intensive products and the competitive strategy of difference-oriented competition by high-tech products, foreign-exchange-earning agricultural products and products with distinctive local features. Chapter IV brings forth the implementing program of the competitive strategy identified in Chapter III that can promote the expansion of the export ofIIISichuan.With th0 implementation of West-China development and China's entry into the WTO, economic globalization and trade liberalization have become the general tend. It is imperative and brooks no delay to develop Sichuan's economy and expand its exports. The aim of the thesis is thus to study the counter-measure with which to sharpen Sichuan's competitive edge in export, hoping to contribute to the expansion of the province's export by applying the theories of strategic management.
