Sovereignty Of China In The Nansha Islands: Challenge And Countermeasure

The Nansha Islands have been a part of the territory of China since ancient times. It is proved by abundant evidences in China both in history and in legal principle that the sovereignty of the Nansha Islands belongs to China indisputably. It is sad that, after the seventies of the 20th century, as the area of Nansha was iscovered with large-scale oiland gas fields and abundant marine resources, its neighbouring countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia occupied a large number of islands and reeves in Nansha successively, and cut apart a large stretch of sea area of Nansha along with Indonesia and Brunei. In this area, those countries explore the petroleum, rob the resources and carry on illegal activities. In addition, Taiwan garrisons the largest island named Peace Island. At present, the countries in the disputes are strengthening their military, economic and political existence in the area of Nansha constantly.The five countries mentioned above claim for the sovereignty of the Nansha Islands and its sea area, which is groundless, and their so-called reasons for occupying are not tenable. But at present, there has already appeared two main and apparent disadvantageous trends or challenges against China at the issue of Nansha. That is, firstly, the countries occupying islands or reeves of Nansha frequently take actions and have been uniting to combat China, and it has already taken on the tendency that the ASEAN countries have jointly tackled China gradually, which is the ASEAN factor, secondly, the big powers outside Nansha area get involved and intervene in the disputes . They are mainly U.S.A and Japan etc that get involved and intervene in the disputes of the Nansha Islands, they are partial to the adjacent countries to Nansha in disputes with China and stand in them. They are trying to keepNansha occupied by a lot of countries. He respects above form great challenges for China to solve Nansha disputes properly and seek a peaceful, secure and steady surrounding environment.Handling the disputes of Nansha properly and perfectly matters a great deal. Several plans of Jointly Development about Nansha questions have been put forward by some. Following comrade Deng Xiaoping's thought of peacefully solving disputes of national territory and sea, Chinese Government has proposed principles and policies as this: "Sovereignty belonging to China with disputes suspended and the area being developed jointly and resolved peacefully ".
