In the age of global competition, the success of the enterprises in various industries, including apparel industry, depends on successful product development. There are many studies concerning product development, but few of them were developed for one specific industry. Particularly, the study of new product performance measurement and influential factors on product success and failure for the apparel industry is blank.Every industry including apparel has its own characteristics. However, the characteristics of apparel product are different from those of other products. The variety and uncertainty of apparel product are the core attribution that increases the difficulties of apparel product development. Therefore, it is necessary to find the general theory that measures the apparel product performance and improve the success of new apparel product. In addition, theoretically, the research will help to decrease the high risk in the product development due to the uncertainties of apparel products.In general, new product development (NPD) research should include two aspects: the measurement of the product performance; and the influential factors of product performance.Based on many public studies on NPD and apparel product development, this study, initially explored the apparel product performance measurement and influential factors of apparel product performance and built a simple model for the apparel product performance measurement through qualitative method. In order to meet the goals outlined in the purpose of this study, face-to-face interviews and participant observations were conducted.There are five chapters in this paper. Chapter 1 introduced the background, purpose, approach and importance of this study. Chapter 2, reviewed of literature, mainly in two separate areas: product development in textile and apparel; and NPD in general marketing and management. Chapter 3 mainly described the methodologies used in conducting this study. Additionally, this chapter specified procedures that were implemented in the execution of this study. Chapter 4 proposed numerous measurement criteria currently used in domestic apparel and retail industry, and established a framework for the new product development performance evaluation model. This chapter only briefly summarized the influential factors on apparel product success and failure happening in Chinese apparel industries. Chapter 5, summary and conclusion of this study, included three sections: implication of conclusion in the apparel industries, limitation of this study and recommendation for further study.During the period of this study, the author grasped the principle knowledge in qualitative research and recent studies in NPD and apparel product development. Furthermore, the author accumulated rich working and social communication experiences.
