At the front of China's reform and opening, south China is the most energetic and developed external trade area, it is also the area with most densely distributed container terminals. The author made a special investigation about the container terminals in the south China area and the economic development of their hinterland, got solid information about the subject by consulting large amount of documents and statistics. And with the tools of the system theory, the competition superiority theory and the compare superiority theory, an analysis and research has been given to the current situation and development trend of container terminals, to the current economic development and trend in the south China area, and to the relation between the container terminal development and regional economic development. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method is used to calculate the correlation between the container terminal throughout and GDP, between the throughout and the amount of foreign trade. According to the regional economic development level, a prediction has been made to the throughout of main container terminals in the south China area in the coming 5 years and to the future container transportation system of the same area. The necessity and feasibility has been demonstrated to coordinate the container terminal development and the regional economic development in the south China area. Existing problems in the planning of container terminals in the south China area have been pointed out: 1.The determination of the port function is not systematic, leading to the situation that every port define itself as a transportation center; 2.Teminal planning implement by stages is not powerfully controlled, leading to an overheat in the investment of container terminals which is not suited to the regional economic development. Certain measures have been proposed to make coordinative developments to reasonably plan contain terminals and to avoid repeated construction and waste of resources. This research is important and practical to further improve the planning and construction of container terminals in the south China area.
