The issue of small and medium enterprise is a world-wide topic. All kinds of small and medium enterprises exist in the developed countries and newly-developed industrialized countries as well as the developing countries. At the same time, the issue of small and medium enterprises is also a long-standing topic. It exists in every country regardless of the past, present or future. As a kind of important economic organization form, it plays an important role in the economic development of every country. So, why can it exist and how does it develop are basic unavoidable issues that researches of small and medium enterprises should deal with. But for a long time, researches on the issues were mainly from government policy or legal perspective in theoretical and practical field. Little is carried out from the small and medium enterprises' own angle.Starting with the small and medium enterprises' status and functions, the paper analyzes the concept and features of them and puts forward the key issue for their survival and growth. Then the writer reviews all kinds of theories on the survival and growth strategies of small and medium enterprises. On the basis of theory of corporate lifecycle, we discuss and study the survival and growth strategies of the small and medium enterprises. The writer believes that in the different lifecycle stages of the small and medium enterprises, the strategy choices must meet some requirements. They should be made according to the time and space. It is well-known that new trends of 21 century will inevitably have far-reaching influence on the survival and growth strategies of the small and medium enterprises. The small and medium enterprises based on the lifecycle theory will change according to the development of these trends.
