With deepening integration of world economy, tariff barriers and traditional non-tariff barriers, erected by some nations to protect domestic markets, have gradually lost their effects. In its place an emerging non-tariff barrier of green trade comes into being. In name of safeguarding ecological environment, natural environment and human health, green trade barrier (GTB) refers to passing and forming a series of complex and demanding regulations and standards of environmental protection to set up barriers against products and services from other nations and regions, limiting exports and protecting domestic markets. GTB has the characteristics of rationality, legality, invisibleness, generality, inequality, discrimination, controversy and relatively lesser negativity, etc.The present paper analyzes the economic, political, judicial, social and theoretic background of GTB's evolution, researches its manifestations and characteristics and forecasts its development trends. After China's WTO entry, some developed nations' traditional trade protection measures against China have broken apart. These nations in turn resort much to GTB. The paper also discusses why GTB has brought about opportunities and challenges for China's import & export trade of agricultural products. Finally, in light of current status of China's import & export trade of agricultural products, the paper proposes corresponding strategies from both macroscopic and microscopic viewpoints.
