This study investigated the self-awareness and social adaptation of the floating children and the relationship between them. Study used the questionnaire method, using the "Piers-Harris Children's Self-consciousness Scale" (English Revised), and Hu Tao`s "Children's Social Adaptation Scale" and Self-made questionnaires on subjects basic situation, tested 530 students of four junior middle schooin Qinhuangdao Hebei Province,of which 509 valid subjects, 209 floating children and 300 local students in Qinhuangdao.The following basic conelusions are made from this research:(A) Floating children have a much lower standard of self-consciousness than urban children and the norm. There are no self-consciousness differences between floating boys and floating girls, but boys is lower than girls in separated scales behaviors and gregarious. For floating children, there are no self-consciousness differences between grades, but Grade three is highest in behavior and is lower than Grade two in anxiety.(B) The level of floating children`s social adaptation is generally lower than that of urban children. The floating children are lower than urban children in second order factors-- adaptation between social relation and their ideas and first order factors-- having good relationship with others, having a harmonious relationship with others, getting identified by the society, having social enthusiasm. But the floating children are more independent in life. There are no social adaptation difference between boys and girls. Boys is lower than girls in second order factors-- adaptation between social relation and their ideas, and boys is lower than girls in first order factors-- living independenily, having a harmonious relationship with others, having social enthusiasm. There are no social adaptation differences among grades.(C) Floating children's self-consciousness can influence the level of social adaptation, and self-consciousness is a important predictor of social adaptation. Related analysis indicates that Floating children's self-consciousness is positively associated with social adaptation. All self-consciousness factors are positively associated with social adaptation.besides the factor physical appearance and properties, so we can know the higher the floating children's self-consciousness, the better their social adaptation. Linear regression indicates that the social adaptation and all factors are predicated by at least three factors of self-consciousness.behavior, anxiety and gregarious are important predictors of social adaptation.
