The preface of this thesis recalls the basic train of thoughts on deciding the topic of "a review about Schram's study of early Mao Zedong thought", and makes a brief introduction of the research's reference texts, object and methods. The prolegomenon part mainly introduces Schram's basic situation, including his biography, writings and thought, as well as domestic translation situations of Schram's academic works and articles. At the same time, the author also concisely arranges the internal research situations about Schram, not only summarizing the conditions of internal academic works and articles, but also specially pointing out that the research on Schram's study of early Mao Zedong thought is in a blank space phase, by which it comes to the main content of the thesis.In the first part, as to the author, Schram holds that early Mao Zedong thought includes five chief aspects which are nationalism, militarism, willpower upholding, anti-tradition and "natural Leninism". From the multi-perspectives, two dimensions of historic backgrounds and objective realities, and two-way clues of "consecutiveness" and "non-consecutiveness", the author attempts to generalize the basic features of Schram's study of early Mao Zedong thought and make a general reflection and evaluation of Schram's perspective, methods and texts based on the above five ones.In the second part, as to the author, Schram primarily investigates the relationship between early Mao Zedong thought and traditional Chinese culture from four aspects as Confucianism, Buddhism, reformism of recent period and Yang Ch'ang-chi's neo-Confucianism, and indicates that early Mao Zedong thought reflects traditional Chinese culture's important influence on language style and source, thinking way and behavior manner, and direct attitude. The basic characters of Schram's study manifest the combination of traditional Chinese culture and nationalism, paying attention to generalizing and comparing Chinese elements and Marxism elements in early Mao Zedong thought, highlighting traditional Chinese culture's factors of early Mao Zedong thought in the exchange of Chinese culture and Western culture. In consideration of the above, the author attempts to make a reflection and evaluation of Schram's historical research methods, "China perspective" of westerners and understanding method of reductionism.In the third part, as to the author, Schram mainly discusses the relationship between early Mao Zedong thought and western thoughts from anarchism, populism, pragmatism and individualism, and the basic features of his study are historical arrangement on the background of conflict and fusion between Chinese culture and Western culture, viewing nationalism as essential source of Mao Zedong's accepting western thoughts, putting Marxism into western thoughts when investigating. Based on these, the author attempts to make a reflection and evaluation of Schram's study from four aspects as acknowledging the historical effect and influence of western thoughts, distinguishing the essential change of Mao Zedong's turning to Marxism, paying attention to the cause and way of Mao Zedong's accepting western thoughts, and unveiling each perspectives of understanding the western thoughts'influence on Mao Zedong.In the fourth part, as to the author, Schram separately compares early Mao Zedong thought with classical Marxism and Marxism of Leninism, and then he indicates that in totality, to Schram's belief, early Mao Zedong thought is a combination of Marxism and Chinese reality which mainly displays in the combination of Marxism and the specific reality of Chinese revolution, the traditional Chinese culture and the nationalism. Finally, the author attempts to make a reflection and evaluation of Schram's "preparation phase" of Marxism Sinicization, comparative approach and the imbalance "Chinese nature".The fifth part of this thesis is a brief peroration about Schram's study of early Mao Zedong thought in which the author emphasizes the value of Schram's Study.
