As a country with long history and centuries-old culture, China is rich in historic cultural towns, where there are plenty of old arcitechture, cultural relics and traditional culture, and which embody their own regional and ethical features through the overall appearance and display typical style and features of a specific historic period, thus boasting of high value in terms of history, culture, art and science. In recent years, with the booming of tourism, the publicity of kinds of media and their own charisma, more people have become concerned with these traditional towns. However, studies on the historic cultural value, landscape characteristics and countermeasures to the preservation and development of these towns are relatively few. In the light of such purpose, this thesis, taking Tongli Town, Suzhou City of Jiangsu Province as an example, makes a systematic study on the perceptions of tourists and residents as well as the preservation and development of tourism. The thesis consists of 5 chapters: In Chapter 1, the author introduces the meanings and values of traditional historic town, makes a review of both overseas and domestic literatures, analysis think that the research of the abroad is in the aspects of traveling influence to community, the relation between development tourism and keeping culture originally, continued development of the traditional village,the behavior characteristi, travel ground evolving and transform, the effect to the economy environment. The domestic studies concentration to protect and develop of traditional town, the culture tourism, building, environment and toursists features of the behavior, feature and worth.Elaborates to the purpose, meanings, research methods and the technique routes of the thesis. On-the-spot investigation, questionnaires, statistic analysis, comparative analysis and interviews on tourism stakeholders are employed during the process of the research. In dealing with the background of Tongli Town in Unit 4, the author mainly expounds on the history of tourism development and the change in its management system, lists the landscapes and features of Tongli Town, analyzes some of favorable factors for tourism development in Tongli Town, such as the strong flavor of typical watertown, its sound fame, long history, convenient trasportation, high quality of service and good environment for investment, etc. In Chapter 2, the author analyzes the questionnaires on tourists and residents'perceptions of Tongli Town. Firstly, she analyzes the basic information of the tourists (such as their age, usual residence, family structure, etc), their travel characteristics (such as overnight tour information, times of travel, travel pattern and purpose, source of information), tourists'perceptions of the means of trasportation, purpose of travel, tourist activities, etc. Then she makes differentiation analyses on their gender, age, educational degree and occupation. Thirdly, she analyzes the basic information of the residents, their percetions of economic, cultural and environmental impacts of tourism, their attitudes towards tourism development and their enthusiasm in English study. Fourthly, she makes differentiation analyses on their gender, age, educational degree, occupation and place of residence. Lastly, she analyzes the difference between residents'and tourists'percetions and the relationship between tourism preservation and development. In Chapter 3, the author makes a detail study on the preservation and development of tourism in Tongli Town. she expounds on the major problem lying in the contradition between ecological pollution and environmental protection, pressure on tourism and people's indifference in the consciousness of tourism preservation. Then the author proposes some basic principles in tourism preservation. Lastly she gives forth some countermeasures concerning the preservation.
