Ever since its appearance on this planet, mankind has never stopped probing into the issue of development. In the modern world, this issue becomes even more urgent and has grown to be the core concern of human beings when they have to reconsider nature, society and themselves. It is true that the human society has made great progress, especially in the 20th century, with a pace and scale incomparable by the past times, yet fast development simultaneously gives rise to a series of problems such as energy crisis, ecological imbalance, environmental worsening, population burst, food shortage, water waste and nuclear threat. These problems usually intermingle and are beyond the capability for one single country to solve. Therefore, from different points of view, people from different parts of the world have begun to criticize the old-fashioned pattern of development and search for alternative modes of development It is under such circumstances that CPC timely proposes a new mode of development, which emphasizes a humane, overall, harmonious and sustainable quality of development.
