Modernization in developing countries has been an important issue of academic research since the 1950s. And it is also an important research field of ethnology. Of the studies, the modernization of the minority ethnic societies has been paid much attention to by scholars abroad and in China. It is noted many studies have focused on the education in modernization of the societies. However, it is also noted that there have been not many studies on the relations between the modernization of the minority ethnic societies and traditional ethnic education. And there have been fewer studies on the relations between the modernization and traditional education and modern education of the rural minority ethnic society.The thesis, by use of the relative theories and methods of ethnology and social-cultural anthropology, explores the relations between the modernization, traditional ethnic education and the modernization and traditional education and modern education of Yar Village, Turpan City, Xinjiang. On the one hand, the thesis traces the social, economic, political and educational changes that took place in the village from 1910 to 2003, on the other hand, it focuses on the issues such as the forms, contents and social functions of the Uygur traditional education, as well as the rise of modern education, its process and changes and relations between the modern and traditional education in Yar village.It is believed that the case study of Yar Village suggests that in the modernization of rural Uygur societies, the modernization of people is a key issue, for which education plays a substantial role. It can be seen from the case that modern education has gradually taken the place of traditional education and important functions in modernization of people have been observed.
