China is undergoing from a traditional agricultural society to a industrial society and the historical trend of urbanization in rural areas is irreversible as the result of the development of the market economy. In order to develop economy rapidly and raise the level of urbanization, more resources, especially the land resources, which are limited and precious, are needed. As a rule, most States expropriate rural collective-owned land with compensation so as to promote the economic construction. However, our system of land that is based on the planned economy is unable to cope with the needs of the market economy. Therefore, numerous problems have arisen and the compensation for land expropriation is the focus. Considering the compensation legislation is lagging behind and the administrative and judicial means of dispute resolution are inadequate, landless peasants'life will be seriously impaired, which may eventually impact the rural development and social stability. Therefore, to establish a sound compensation system of China's land expropriation is an urgent task. This paper sees thoroughly into our existing system and explores better compensation mechanisms and methods for the reform of the system of China's compensation system of land expropriation.
