With the end of Cold War, America established its unassailable position as the world hegemony and its influence can not be ignored. To America, East Asia is of great significance, and the current rise of China especially arouses much attention by U.S. America has already regarded China as the biggest challenge and potential rival. Under such background, it is essentially important to study American Grand Strategy, which plays an instructive role in American policy towards East Asia. This article begins with the analysis of American Grand Strategy, analyses the internal correlation between different international relations theories and the mode of American Grand Strategy, discusses the influences of liberalism, realism and neo-conservatism on the establishment of foreign strategy in decision-making layers. On this basis, the Grand Strategy will be examined with the policy towards East Asia together. Through the adjustment and evolvement of Grand Strategy, the author will observe the corresponding adjustment of the policy towards East Asia, analyze impacts of this adjustment, especially of the policy towards China, has on China, and provide Chinese replying policy to it. In the present thesis, such methods as comparative analysis and historical analysis are used, in order to reach some degree of technicality and practice through argumentation with adequate materials and precise manner of writing. This thesis consists of four parts: the first part defines the Grand Strategy, national security strategy and policy towards East Asia, discusses the relationship between Grand Strategy and policy towards East Asia, and then introduces the main mode and theoretical basis of American Grand Strategy after Cold War. The second part reviews the Grand Strategy during the period of Colinton administrations and the first term of George W. Bush and the adjustment of the policy towards East Asia, in addition analyses comparatively the different policies between them. The third part explores the adjustment of Grand Strategy since George W. Bush's second term and the new trends of policy towards East Asia, combined with American new National Security Strategy Report in 2007, and then predicts the future tendency of the policy towards East Asia. The fourth part introduces the debate in American theory circle on the policy towards China, and then summarizes the adjustments of policies towards China of the American governments after Cold War, especially the George W. Bush's administration in the past few years, and the impacts on China. At last the author concludes that China must fully realize the complexity of Sino-American relations, neither challenge it initiatively, nor reply to its challenge passively. What China should do, is both to compete and to cooperate, neither to be humble nor to be arrogant, and to deal with anything steadily and calmly. In short, China should deal with the problems in Sino-America relations with outstanding political intelligence.
