Hostage taking is a Severe criminal activity. It is directly related to life of people, social stabilization and so on. Crisis and hostage negotiation is one of the important methods to prevent the accident extending and calm down the event quickly as well as one of the problems all of the governments and police departments in the world focused on. The keys to obtaining the success of hostage negotiation depend on if the on-site negotiators can analyze the mind of the hostage taker quickly and rightly; if the negotiators can control the mood on-site well and if the negotiators grasp the transacting skills. Therefore, understanding psychology important role in hostage negotiation, advancing and enriching the psychological knowledge of the police troop and improving their negotiating means have already been a pressing task.The research aims to analyze the mind of a few kinds of familiar hostage takers based upon the previous studies and bring forward to some scientific and reasonable coping strategies, As a whole, the study was formed by seven parts. Firstly, in the Part One, the research introduced a few important basic conceptions on the hostage negotiation separately, explained the structures of the negotiation and discussed the three functions psychology played in the negotiation. Then, in the Part Two, we compared the hostage negotiation researches between China and foreign countries, analyzed the negotiation characteristics of our country and put forward the emphases in the research based upon the research status and the questions in the field. In the Part Three, we analyzed and discoursed upon a few familiar psychological phenomena and the strategies in the hostage negotiation. The Part Four is the central part in the study. We mainly analyzed the mind of the three different types of hostage takers (terrorists, trapped criminals and subjects with mental disorder) and advanced the corresponding coping strategies based upon the theory analysis. In the Part Five, we discussed the psychological requirement of the negotiators in the hostage negotiation from three ways. In the Part Six, the research expounded the psychological requirement of the correlation social departments and personnel in the hostage negotiation. The Part Seven is the conclusion part. We discussed the lack and the shortage in the study, and pointed out the research future and the development trend.
