This thesis is designed to probe into the very reason why American religion could maintain a high degree of prosperity and diversity when many other countries are experiencing religious decline. After a series of analyses, the thesis points out that the American principle of religious freedom plays a fundamental role not only in keeping America a most religious country despite of its extremely materialistic image, but also promoting religious diversity. While, the operational legal model implemented by American government is the basic guarantee of the principle of religious freedom. Therefore, the main concern of this thesis is the operational legal model regarding religion in America. The thesis picks up three points as its main focus: religious freedom under legislation protection; religious freedom under judicial protection; and the legal regulation of religious groups by means of tax exemption. To test the efficiency of the operational legal model mentioned above and as an explanation to the question why the principle of freedom of religion could function as a cornerstone for the prosperity of American religion, the dynamic development of religious organizations is another focus of this thesis. As a summary, the thesis concludes that the combined principles of freedom of religion and of the separation of church and state confer a stamp of distinctiveness of American religion. And the fundamental force that guarantees the effectiveness of the principles is the perfect legal model. By designing this thesis, the author meant to shed light on the necessity of setting up efficient statute assurance for religion, which is of great significance both for the construction of a harmonious society and for sustaining social peace.
