Research On The Ethnic Relations In Shihezi County

In the history of every country's development, ethnic issue is always an important factor which breed ethnic contradictions and thus affect the internal stability of a nation. In China, due to the special geographic location and the complicated ethnic components in Xinjiang, the ethnic issue is comparatively complicated and sensitive. If not handled rightly, it'll threaten the stability and development of Xinjiang and even those of the whole nation. Therefore it's important to study the ethnic relation in Xinjiang.This dissertation studies the four ethnic groups(Han population, Hui, Uigur and Kazakhstan minorities)in four villages in Shihezi county,Shihezi,Xinjiang. It firstly analyzes the economic and social structures of the four ethnic groups from a macro view. Then it makes a survey and thus a quantitative analysis of the ethnic relation between the four ethnic groups using the following six variables: living pattern, population flow, language use, religion belief, cross-marriage and psychological distance. It also acquires perceptual knowledge through participating observation and case interview. Based on the analysis above, the dissertation discusses the pros and cons of the factors that affect the local ethnic relations and gives advice on how to keep on boosting the harmonious ethnic relations of the local people.This dissertation applies the knowledges of ethnology, cultural anthnology, social statistics, demographics and sociology, combines documentary analysis and field survey, quantitative and qualitative analysis, macro and micro analysis. It aims to give a comprehensive and objective description of the ethnic relations in Shihezi county and its affecting factors by setting up a variable system referring to the measuring index home and abroad and by making questionnaires , survey and individual interview deep into the villages. This dissertation hopes to offers a new case as well as a new angle of view, and provides the theory research of ethnic relation with first-hand community demonstration materials which enrich and extend the contents and scopes of the ethnic relation research in China. Apart from that, the research provides the local government the theory basis and data references in advancing its ethnic relation .And gives strong humane support to Shihezi county's economic and social development to further boost the harmonious ethnic relations and harmonious society construction in Shihezi , Xinjiang province.
