As the main representation of urban social space, residential space differentiation becomes the main object for research with the dramatic changes of the urban social space in the transformation and expansion of the cities. Under the reformed background of income distribution, land grant and housing commercialization system, the different social spaces are occurred which are different from those in planned-economy period. The social structure and spatial structure are mutually influenced in the socio-spatial dialectic theory. The outstanding manifestation of the class separation is residential differentiation in the urban social space. The thesis tries to find out the features of class separation and urban residential differentiation and to what extent the two are mutually influenced and how they influenced each other.The researches abroad on the urban social space and class separation are fruitful, while the researches in China lack the macroscopic and systematic theory and the basic microscopic observation of the different cities because of a late start. The thesis chooses Hangzhou as the research place, in which the theory and practice are combined and methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis are employed. The thesis is based on the Socio-spatial theory and the point of view that the class separation generated the Residential Differentiation. By using the fifth national census data and making each resident community and town as a unit to classify, extract and conclude the data, the conditions of the class separation and residential differentiation of each unit are grasped. After the comparative analysis and the related investigation, the author got the features of class separation and residential differentiation. The formation mechanism and especially the functions of the class separation are explained. The consequences of the condition are discussed and some solutions and suggestions are also proposed at the end of the thesis.
