Theodore Roosevelt was the first president of American in twenty century. He is always in the best of five when historians comment on the American presidents. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century, the American development of capitalism to its final stage——imperialism, which made the U.S. accelerated the pace of external expansion. It was the result of monopoly capital to promote, otherwise, at this point in the development of the western United States has basically completed, and the domestic market has been unable to accommodate the growing industrial products, so to find foreign markets would become imperative. In addition, the United States is the expansion of the state in traditional sense. And as early as the end of the 19th century, its demand outward expansion has been a great clamor of voices, and advocating external expansion of the"theory"has emerged. The effect of Mahan's"sea power"particularly conspicuous. Theodore Roosevelt was an expansion of the navy in itself, he actively preach the importance of building a strong navy. All of these was based on the economic strength of the backing of the United States, which want to seeking a considerable political strength. Therefore, although Theodore Roosevelt was known as"fanatical expansionist"and"racist", his achievements which striving for the American also stayed in people's minds. To that, this paper takes the external expansion of Theodore Roosevelt as the main theme, from three aspects to analyses the background of expansionist policies, the source of ideas and the specific practice, and affirmed his positive effect. Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most positive significance leaders of the United States, he promoted the American to embark on the road of overlord to world power which laid the foundation for global expansion after the World WarⅡ.ChapterⅠ: Analyses the background of external expansion. The main factor was the continuously enhance of economic strength. Besides, the external expansionist thoughts has the role of adding fuel to the flames. It shows that overseas expansion at that time already is the general trend.ChapterⅡ:Analyses the ideological source of overseas expansion of Theodore Roosevelt. It mainly due to the influence of the"Monroe Doctrine",Turner's"frontier theory"and Mahan's"sea power", which offer a theoretical basis for the implementation of expansion policy.ChapterⅢ: Analyses the practice of overseas expansion. Under the guidance of the above theory, and coupled with Roosevelt's personal international strategic thinking, it makes the United States play a different role in Latin American,Europe and the Far East Pacific region. The results are in order to safeguard the national interests of the United State and try to play the role of world power.Conclusion: This part is mainly based on the first three discussion to appraise Theodore Roosevelt and his overseas expansion policy. Generally speaking, Roosevelt was mainly play a positive role. He not only saved the United States, but also awakened the sleeping people of the United States.
