Trust: Foundation Of China-ASEAN Cooperation

ASEAN countries are an important part in China's foreign policy.After the World Warâ…¡,China-ASEAN relations experienced a series of changes and developments.From the perspective of Confidence-Building,this paper analyzes the development of China-ASENA relations.Introduction part raises the research question,its significance and literature review.Combining the related theories on trust in Economics and Sociology,Chapter 1 discusses the importance of trust at the national level,analyzes the function and influence of trust in International Relations,and defines the concept of trust.Chapter 2 reviews the historic evolution of China-ASEAN relations from three stages:the hostility and confrontation,deforestation and rapprochement,engagement and development.The author concludes that the trust exists and develops in the political, economic and security China-ASEAN relations.Chapter 3 is the most important part of this paper.It empirically verifies that trust exists and is being built in China-ASEAN relations in the following fields:their cooperation in the ASEAN Regional Forum,China-ASEAN summit meetings,the negotiation process of the South China Sea issue,and cooperation in both traditional and non-traditional security.The conclusion deals with prospects,possible challenges and problems in China-ASEAN relations.The author calls for strengthening the existing and promoting more confidence-building mechanism for consolidating the trust between China and ASEAN for advancing their further cooperation.
