WTO Infants Industry Protection Provisions And The Protection Of Auto Parts Industry In China

Infants'industry is defined as the lack of competitiveness of the industry which a country's economic development plans for. WTO,which based on free trade theory, advocates the principles of free trade, and opposes trade protectionism. But in order to help members to establish and develop infants'industry,WTO does not oppose the appropriate protection of domestic industries. WTO/GATT made an infants'industry protection clause that allow members in tariffs and quantitative restrictions to protect infants'industry. Some infants industries in China are impacted inevitably. It is an important issue concerning the prosperity of our national infants'industries and the safety of our national economy how to provide necessary supports and protections for the national infants'industries while fulfilling our commitments and obligations after our accession to the WTO. So the infants' industry protection clause of WTO/GATT is very important to China. The author has first analyzed the infants'industry protection clause of WTO/GATT, explained the conditions and procedures of invoking this clause. Then take the China automotive parts industry for instance to make some considerations and suggestions on infants industry protection in accordance with related WTO/GATT rules.
