American scholar Russell Jacoby teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles, sense of belonging to the traditional left-wing intellectuals. Over the years his research always focus on the intellectuals, trying a wide range of socio-cultural analysis of the topic combined with cutting-edge theory, to explore contemporary ideas of intellectuals of the underlying causes.In this issue, the writing over the years, Professor Jacoby quite good, very creative. But he three most important theoretical writings of intellectuals, "The Last Intellectuals," "The End of Utopia" and "Picture Imperfect" was only involved in domestic cited in recent years. We can find, although Jacoby never specifically emphasized, but in his theory of the intellectuals, the death of the Utopian spirit, the spread of multiculturalism and the institutionalization of the intellectuals are the most important three leads of his theory. This article is trying to address through a combination of related and Jacob's text in order to clarify the three leads. And based on this, to show Jacoby's theory's Significance and the value of the reference for the reality issues in contemporary Western and China.The full text is divided into five parts: In the first part, to sum up the introduction of Russell Jacoby and his research's background, origins and more or less coverage. Made the three main co-hidden clues in his theory and other contemporary theories about the intellectuals; In the second part, try thematic analysis of intellectuals' spirit's whole process of alienation. Jacoby also pointed out the key ideas to reverse the verdict for the Utopian spirit; The third part focus on the spread of multiculturalism in the post-modern context, combined with practical case to give studies of contemporary culture's deadlock a multi-level explanation; The forth part focus on the institutionalization of the institutes' current situation and come to sort out the fundamental reason to the loss of public intellectuals; In the fifth part, try to summing up the three main leads and the relationship between each other. After that, point out that the study can be regarded as a basic perspective on contemporary intellectuals study. Which allows us to understand the unique value of Jacoby, and to explore its possible impact on domestic related research.
